Personal Story
Coming from a long line of doctors, pharmacists, and dentists, it was natural for me to pursue a career in healthcare. My decision to specialize in orthodontics came while I was a dental student at NYU, when my experience with braces gave me the confidence and appreciation for what orthodontics could achieve. That transformation inspired my lifelong commitment to helping others gain the same confidence through healthy, functional, and beautiful smiles.

Biography
Dr. Ilya Lipkin is a board-certified orthodontist with over 25 years of experience, practicing at Gentle Dental of NJ in Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood. He graduated from NYU College of Dentistry and has dedicated his career to orthodontic care guided by the Roth/Williams philosophy.
Board certification in orthodontics is voluntary and requires passing rigorous examinations beyond the standard orthodontic residency. Fewer than half of practicing orthodontists hold this credential. It reflects Dr. Lipkin’s commitment to meeting the highest standards in his field and staying current with evidence-based treatment approaches.
The Roth/Williams method, developed by Dr. Ronald Roth and Dr. Robert Williams, represents a systematic approach to orthodontics that considers six keys to optimal occlusion. Dr. Lipkin applies these principles to every case, whether he’s treating a teenager with crowding or an adult with a complex bite discrepancy. The result is treatment that doesn’t just look good on the day braces come off but remains stable for years afterward.
Beyond his private practice, Dr. Lipkin serves as Clinical Professor at NYU College of Dentistry and Visiting Faculty at St. Barnabas Medical Center. He lectures nationally and internationally on orthodontic and orthognathic topics, contributing to the education of future specialists.
Recognized for academic and clinical excellence, Dr. Lipkin has received numerous honors, including:
– Award for Excellence in the General Practice of Dentistry and Human Values
– NYU Orthodontics Program Director’s Award
– NYU Postdoctoral Orthodontics Achievement Award
He co-authored “Digital Imaging in Orthodontics” (Orthodontic Products, February 2000) and continues to pursue advanced postgraduate education in orthodontics and orthognathic treatment.
Clinical Focus
Traditional Braces – Metal braces remain the most versatile orthodontic tool for correcting complex malocclusions. Dr. Lipkin uses precision-placed brackets and custom archwires to control tooth movement in all three dimensions.
Invisalign Clear Aligners – For patients who prefer a more discreet option, Invisalign uses custom-made clear trays to gradually shift teeth into place. Dr. Lipkin plans each stage of movement digitally and monitors progress at regular appointments.
Adult Orthodontics – About one in four orthodontic patients today is an adult. Dr. Lipkin designs treatment plans that account for existing restorations, gum health considerations, and the need for a discreet appearance during treatment.
Bite Correction – Overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites affect more than appearance. They can cause uneven tooth wear, jaw pain, and difficulty chewing. Dr. Lipkin’s Roth/Williams training focuses heavily on achieving proper jaw and bite relationships.
Early Orthodontic Evaluation – Children should see an orthodontist by age 7. Dr. Lipkin identifies developing problems like crossbites, severe crowding, and abnormal jaw growth that benefit from early intervention.
